Character Information
Name: Ruri Hoshino
Canon: Martian Successor Nadesico: Prince of Darkness
Canon Point: End of film
Age: 16
History: http://nadesico.wikia.com/wiki/Ruri_Hoshino
Personality: Ruri as a person can be summed up in one word: muted. She was raised to be a computer interface and not a girl, and as such was taught science, mathematics, philosophy, but never taught how to play or be a child. Because of this she developed her intellect but not her emotions, not to say she is incapable of showing emotion, she is just not comfortable with them. Her rare shows of emotion tend to be at major victories, and still muted (the first time she smiled in the show drew the attention of 2 other characters as rather extraordinary).
She is a fairly tolerant girl, especially given her IQ being over the 300 range. She will frequently call people idiots, but is just as likely to call herself one. Idiocy is part of being human and nothing to be ashamed of, as long as it’s learned from. Thinking that she feels it's her duty to point out when someone is being an idiot so that they may grow from it and be less of an idiot tomorrow. Even if they don't, she much prefers idiocy to deception, and the only way to truly upset or offend her is to lie and be caught in it.
Ruri was born as the subject of a genetic experiment to create the perfect person. She can’t have cancer, and had the negative effects of poor eyesight and health associated with being an albino removed. She was made mostly immune to sickness and all of the scientists frequently called her the next step in evolution. Coupled with the fact she is so smart, and she didn’t break due to her intellectual conditioning, something that the other 19 subjects in her test group could not say, she in many ways knows that she is “better” than just about everyone else. However, whenever anyone brings it up, she simply states that she is an ordinary girl. This is partially because she doesn’t want to start believing her own hype and making mistakes due to it, and partially because it keeps people off guard.
When she later found out about her birth parents, the king and queen of the rich merchant nation of Peaceland, she reacted mutedly as usual. Instead of showing joy, or developing an ego, she quietly requested time, then asked to be told where the institute she was raised in was. It was more important that she go there and be connected with the sound of the fish that was her first truly happy and more importantly real memory than the money or family. Later when she was offered the chance to live with her family (Blank of 5 years) but at the cost of them paying off the rest of her contract, she chose to stay with the captain of the Nadesico and was adopted as her daughter, preferring to live in the single room she shared with Yurika and Akito where everyone was at least honest, as opposed to the pampered intrigue of the wealthy.
Ruri's biggest suffering is a lack of understanding of how people think. Lying for self-gain, or really any reason strikes her as offensive, as lies in computer code are errors and need to be debugged. Frequently she sees it as the terrible world of adults, and even as she grew into adulthood she swore never to fall into that trap. She has never really been with people her own age, and she never got to be a child. While she will play video games against Omoikane, the concept of "relaxing" is somewhat foreign to her. As such on times of long space voyages or other such times of immense down time she tended to pick up extra shifts so that others could relax and she had something to focus on.
Ruri doesn't have many friends, she doesn't quite understand people enough to make them easily. Those she DOES consider friends she views as family, and she is fiercely loyal to them. Ruri was willing to become a military fugitive to keep it so that her friends would always have the Nadesico to call home (she hid in the subzero computer core to keep them from reformatting it). She also took the blame for MANY of Yurika's infractions on the bridge (firing the main gun on a stealth op because she accidently pressed the button and such), and assaulted a thug that was 3 times her size who was beating up her appointed knight with a giant spatula. In the end, to save her closest friends she took her ship on a suicide mission against a fleet and was able to focus her own talents enough to take down an entire planetary data grid.
Ruri doesn't like bloodshed though. She was one of two people to mourn the first fatality of the Nadesico, and all her solutions tend to center on as few deaths as possible. While not afraid to use force, always preferred a non-fatal plan, mostly because she has seen a lot of robot anime where enemies can become friends AS WELL as the mentality of “If they are dead, they can’t suffer” for the times that she is actually pressed hard enough to push a fight through. A good example of this was the battle with the Martian Successors where she started by shutting down all of their robots movement, weapons, and life support systems before demanding surrender.
She does however like to make sure that those she beats, know it was her. Tactics are like a game of chess with her and she knows she can’t prepare for everything, but if she can keep the other side talking she can out think them. She made CERTAIN the Martian Successors knew it was her when she shut them down, and she gained that ability by simply forcing them to countermove against her less than conventional tactics till she understood where they were coming from. When the UN forces were actively hiding the fact of what the Jovians were after the crew of the Nadesico had some ideas, she tapped into the com system of the entire ship and as the crew slowly drove one of the people in line to learn about the conspiracy crazy she electronically followed him.
Ruri doesn’t really deal well with nature either. She doesn’t hate it, but she doesn’t exactly know how to function in it. She finds the sound of lakes and fish relaxing, but she can’t swim. She enjoyed her time on the beach, but really just spent the day under an umbrella working on her computer. Given how most of her time is spent in a tiny metal box in space, or in cities, she is a bit uncomfortable in places with no manmade structures and doesn’t really know how to interact with nature and wildlife. In her canon it isn’t an issue since she rarely has to ever even go in it, but she was not comfortable with the idea of camping, and other than cute domesticated animals generally isn’t comfortable with them.
Abilities: Super Genius IQ: Ruri has a documented IQ over 300
Computer Hacker: Ruri was trained to socialize AIs and prevent them from rampaging, in her time with the help of her supercomputer she caused the Martian Successor fleet to be defeated by hacking over 100 ships and their mecha accompaniment.
Strengths: iron willed, intelligent, sincere, curious, patient
Weaknesses: Needs to see to believe, spiteful, never forgets a slight, confused by emotion, innocent
God/Shinki: God
Why?: Ruri while being good at following orders, tends to be a better organizer and leader than support. Also while a counterpuncher most of her in canon actions are the ones that the crew later decides are the correct ones. Also she was created to be a “perfect being” on Earth, and while the experiment ultimately was a failure (every member had serious psychological defects) Ruri was able to move past her own defects and become a functional leader. Also, while there are no gods or magic in her canon, Ruri is loved and almost worshiped for her skills (and to her chagrin cuteness) by the Earth forces and freely admits that with their trust she can do more.
Top 3 Choices: Omoikane, Seshat, Jiutian Xuannü
God Type: Knowledge God with an understanding of War. Ruri always believes in using one’s mind to limit casualties and to move forward. She will at first try to take on requests that will help the most people but ultimately will move towards ones that help people empower themselves. She believes that everyone needs help sometimes, but sometimes everyone must do for themselves and as such will be more prone towards requests that help people help themselves. She will more try to use her own wits over divine powers to do this as she tends to rely more on scientific laws and an understanding that an idiot will be an idiot. As she was with the Nadesico, when she became the Captain she honored the previous captain’s mindset and ideas while trying to work them more towards a logical order she can understand and work within.
